The original image was taken after an exhausting two mile walk along the beach during the mid day sun. So much for the golden hours of light, but when travelling one has to accept the condiitions that the weather and God Lord provides. This lighthouse is on the outer edge of Cape Cod and is so isolated that one gets real feel for the job of the keepers of yesteryear. In addition to the painted texture added to the image, the sky is also a separate image to add a bit of dramatics.
The original lighthouse at Race Point was s 20-foot rubble tower constructed in 1816. The current 40-foot tower was built in 1876. The lighthouse and associated buildings can be visited by 4 wheel drive vehicles or a very long (2 mi.) walk to the end of Cape Cod at Provincetown. However, a more interesting way to view this lighthouse as well as Long Point and Wood End lights is by joining a whale watch cruise from P-town. Early spring, from the end of April through June seem to offer the best whale activity. The trips are inexpensive, informative, and can be very exciting as these huge mammals feed off the Mass. Coastline.
